How to Dispute An account that is not yours with TransUnion
Disputing an account that is not yours with TransUnion
You can dispute an account that is not yours with TransUnion online at transunion.com, by mail, or by phone. Online is fastest, but mail creates a paper trail; send copies, never originals, and keep proof of delivery.
What to identify
Pin down the account number and any identifying details shown. A dispute that says exactly which field is wrong and why is easier to investigate than a general complaint.
Evidence that helps
Gather identity-theft reports from identitytheft.gov and your own records. Circle the exact lines you rely on and include a short, factual explanation.
The timeline
The bureau generally has 30 days to investigate (up to 45 in some cases, such as when you dispute after getting a free annual report or send extra information mid-investigation). It must notify you of the result and send a free updated report if something changed.
If the item is verified but you still disagree
- Dispute directly with the furnisher (the company reporting it) in writing.
- Add a brief consumer statement to your file.
- File a complaint with the CFPB if the investigation seems unreasonable.
